Quito, Ecuador: Fall Semester 2019

Academics:
Curriculum:
Fall (Min 12 - Max 15 credits at the 300 or 400 level)
  • SW 482 + SW 480 (through UP): 9 credits (mandatory)
  • 3 – 6 credits upper division Spanish (through ACLAS) (at least 3 credits mandatory)

Prerequisites:
  • SPN 301 and 302
  • All SW courses except SW 480, SW 481, SW 483; all lower-division University and CAS requirements.

Corequisite:
  • SW 480.
Program Dates:
Fall semester will begin in mid-July and end in December.

The Experience:
Students will be placed in a social service agency in Quito, Ecuador for the fall semester. Students will register for the practicum (SW 482) through UP, and Dr. Kevin Jones will provide individual or group supervision once a week in addition to the weekly supervision students receive from their onsite field instructor. Students will also participate in the weekly seminar using Skype and complete all the other remaining requirements for SW 482, including online discussion board posts and process recordings.  Students will take SW 480 concurrently, participating online. Students will enroll in one to two Spanish language courses offered by the Andean Center for Latin American Studies ACLAS.

Kiva Goodman in QuitoThe Center:
UP is partnering with the Andean Center for Latin American Studies (ACLAS) to provide high quality, safe, and accessible learning in Quito. The center has 8 classrooms, a computer lab, library, kitchen, and a courtyard for study. The center is accessible to students 24/7 and a guard is on-site to watch the campus. http://www.aclas.org/home
 
Students will also learn about the cultures of Ecuador and other Latin American countries through their homestay families and excursions. Excursions for 2018 will include visits to: Mitad del Mundo (equator), Otavalo (nearby indigenous city), Atacames (Coastal city) and an Ecuadoran jungle. Social work students will be placed into local organizations for additional immersion in service-learning environments. All program activities will be done in Spanish. These excursions are part of the program expenses. 

Accommodations:
Students will live with Ecuadoran families, which have been carefully selected by ACLAS, allowing full immersion into the culture and language of Ecuador.

Cost:
Program fee: $32,480

Includes:
Tuition at UP, room and board (families will provide most meals) at homestay for duration of program, 24/7 access to ACLAS secure facilities, official program excursions, administrative fees related to coordinating program including locating and vetting social service agencies appropriate for placement; identifying and securing appropriate field instructors; education for the agencies and filed instructors about UP’s requirements and field instructor duties; meetings with students to identify skills and interests; orientation for students to culture and agency; establishing homestays for students; problem solving with agencies after students are placed; assisting students establish projects; regular access for students to computers and internet for completing assignments; and ongoing communication with the Field Director, and international travel insurance.

Fees do not include:
  • Airfare to/from Quito
  • Independent travel
  • Extra expenses for personal needs, entertainment, and non-program related activities
