Students take six credits of Spanish language at either 200 or 300 level. There are two different tracks available.
Upper Division Track
includes two courses. SPN 391, "Asturias: Historia y Cultura" (3 credits) taught by a local faculty member, and SPN 491 (3 credits), an advanced level Spanish course titled "Literature of Northern Spain: Sinners and Saints, Pilgrims and Penitents" that is taught by UP professor, Dr. Matthew Warshawsky. Prerequisites are SPN 301 and SPN 302.
includes SPN 207, an intermediate level Spanish course taught by a local faculty member that counts for six university credits.
Classroom facilities are at the Universtiy of Oviedo or the GEO Center.
Cathedral de San Salvador
Students will stay with homestay families in Oviedo, and will receive all meals from their homestay families.
Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias, located in northern Spain and 30 minutes from the coast. Founded in 761, the city is rich with history and architectural tradition, with many buildings dating back to the medieval period.
During this program students have the opportunity for local excursions to the Cathedral, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Archaeology Museum. Excursions outside of Oviedo include two day trips and a weekend excursion. One day trip is to Asturias and Covadonga, and the other is to Gijon and Aviles. The weekend trip is for two nights to either Bilbao or Madrid.
